Say Yes
It rings very true for me, but we all tend to question our own abilities
Over the years there have been times (probably more than I can count) where I would get in my own way, preventing myself from moving forward. Usually there would be no better reason than I was just nervous or worried I was going to fail.
I’ve questioned my abilities, and haven’t agreed to take on shoots I was perfectly capable of. I’ve negotiated estimates down, worried it’s going to be too much before even sending it, only for it to be approved right away regardless. I’ve recommended other people, instead of doing work myself, when I’ve been more than capable.
Were these shoots out of my ability level? Probably not, and they definitely weren’t so far beyond my abilities that I wouldn’t have been able to show up, be a professional, and still deliver well within the scope of the projects.
It rings very true for me, but we all tend to question our own abilities. Obviously I’m not an expert in everything, and there are plenty of situations where it’s better to bring other people in. But over the last few years, I’ve been making it a point to not get in my own way, and stop questioning my abilities on things I know I have the capability to do.
Be willing to say yes, step up, do the work, and get out of your own way.
