Honing Skills

Jump Camp with the Canadian National Snowboard Team

Recently there was a jump camp in Whistler for the Canadian National Team. They do this every season around this time, and the goal is to sharpen those big tricks going into the contest season, this year in particular the Olympics.

There was no expectation with these photos. I was creating a few for Alto Marketing and Management, but this was as a favour so I was really able to do what I wanted. I always make sure to get some safe shots, even if I’m just shooting for myself, but push myself to shoot in a way that is different, or uncomfortable for myself.

Overall I try not to chase trends, some current ones being, motion blur, guy in the sky, multiple exposures, processing images as negatives. The list goes on of what is hot at the moment, but I have a particular style I like to shoot, and generally stick to it. However, I do make sure I can shoot these various techniques, as occasionally I will get asked to do them and I want to make sure I’m not trying to figure something out in the moment. A group of the world's best riders hitting the jump time after time, and nobody counting on these photos is the perfect time to practice this.

Shooting, like snowboarding needs, to be practiced. So you can keep your skills sharp all while constantly pushing yourself to learn and grow to create new and better work.

Riders: Mark McMorris, Cameron Spalding, Momo Maheux, Truth Smith, Tosh Krauskopf
